Troubleshooting Common Mac Problems | Dynemac

Troubleshoot the Four Most Common MacBook Problems

MacBook’s run like a dream most of the time, but when they encounter problems you may feel frustrated if you cannot quickly find the solution.

If you feel stuck tinkering on your computer or wondering why something simply will not work, then see if your problem is one of the four listed below and can be solved by our recommended fix. If not, you may need to seek out professional Atlanta MacBook repair to get it running at tip-top shape once more.

WiFi Won’t Connect

Step 1, if your WiFi refuses to connect to a network, you can try turning your WiFi feature off and then back on again to see if that helps solidify the connection. If this approach does not work, make sure that you are connecting to the right network with the right password. Go into System Preferences>Network Preferences>Advanced to see which networks you are connected to, disconnect manually and change your preferences for automatic connections.

Still no luck? Shut down your computer completely and do a PRAM reset. This involves pressing the power button and then holding down command+option+p+r. Continue to hold those 4 keys until your macbook reboots and you here the apple chime again. I recommend letting it reboot 2-3 times if you do not hear the chime after the first reboot.

If all seems to be working with your laptop then it may be your network.  If you are at home, unplug your router and modem for 40 seconds, then plug them back in and wait a few minutes for the WiFi signal to come back. If you are on a public network, see if anyone else around you is having trouble, and consider asking the management to check on their modem and router.

One important thing to note is whether you have upgraded to the latest MacOS version 10.12 ; Sierra, since it fixes connection issues among other common problems.

Battery Won’t Charge

If your battery will not charge, your goal is to rule out probable causes. Start by checking the adapter to make sure it is connected completely to the laptop and the outlet. Then, try moving the charger to a different outlet to see if the outlet was the problem.

If you still have issues charging, ask to borrow an identical charger from someone to see if the issue is with the charger itself.

If the laptop itself is the problem, you can reset the System Management Controller to see if that affects the hardware performance. You may also need to replace the battery and/or the AC jack inside your MacBook if the laptop is old or damaged.

MacBook Is Frozen

When an app freezes more than a few minutes, you may need to force quit by pressing the option button and control clicking the app in question on the dock. If you cannot access the app icon in the dock, pressing Command+Option+Escape at the same time opening the Force Quit Applications window.

Additionally, you can hold the power button down to force shutdown the computer. This is not recommended as the first approach since it will close all tabs/apps you have been working on that were unsaved.

If an application freezes constantly, try uninstalling and reinstalling it to improve performance, or check to see if it is updated to the latest version.

MacBook Runs Slow

If your MacBook is running slowly, first check to see that it has enough air circulating. Overheating electronics tend to slow down.

A particular app may also be causing your performance hang-ups, so open your Activity Monitor (you can press command+spacebar and then type “Activity Monitor”), and then click on the “Memory” tab at the top to sort by how much memory each app is using. You can quit almost any apps you are not currently using. Restarting any app you are using may help improve its memory usage, and so can restarting the whole computer.

If you have apps that act like consistent memory hogs, consider uninstalling them or updating to a newer version.

Additionally, you may need to clear out some files and apps if your hard drive storage is running low. When all else has failed you may need to upgrade your hardware. Consider bringing it into our store for a memory upgrade(on select models) or a complete upgrade on your hard drive or flash storage. Either of these upgrades are usually completed within the same day by our Apple Certified Technicians.
